Himalayan Day

Himalayan Day
In the summer Key Stage 2 children from across the Federation met at Farway and took part in a celebration of Himalayan culture. They explored, with a visitor, aspects of the culture and religion of the Himalayan region. This involved exploring a range of artefacts and objects, dressing up and learning about some of the festivals that might be celebrated in countries such as India or Nepal and how they would be celebrated.

In the afternoon, Miss Moss shared with the children some of her experience of living for several years in Nepal, especially having to learn a whole new alphabet to read and write. The children learned about food, clothes and the different styles of homes that might be found in the mountains of Nepal. They also learned about the transport in Nepal, how things are carried around the mountains by yaks and sherpas and how the mountain environment and weather might affect daily life in a mountain region. Working in groups, the children used photographs and artefacts to explore a particular aspect of Himalayan life and then reported back to the rest of the group about their observations.
