Trip to Upottery Airfield Heritage Centre

Trip to Upottery Airfield Heritage Centre
As part of our WWII topic in the Autumn term, we visited Upottery Airfield Heritage Centre and went back in time to experience life in WWII, particularly the pilots and paratroopers of the RAF.

Inside the Sergeant's bedroom we thought about how the paratroopers would have felt knowing at any minute they could be called up to fly to an unknown destination, jump out of a plane and fight for their country. We decided they would want to write letters home to their families to keep in touch and reassure them that we were safe for now. We also tried on soldiers' outfits and thought about evacuation and food rationing in 1940s Britain.

After lunch, we returned to Broadhembury School and took part in some orienteering activities - we thought about paratroopers who may have landed with their parachute in an unknown place and what skills they will have needed to navigate their way to safety. The children found the eight points of a compass and used this to play a code-breaking game to solve an anagram - SPITFIRE! The children had a great time and represented Farway wonderfully.
